Nature Tourism

One of our foremost goals is maintaining a sustainable environment and natural habitat for native wildlife. In doing so, the BLCC is an ideal location for nature enthusiasts who wish to enjoy all that Texas has to offer. Whether you enjoy the peace of bird watching or the adventure of hiking and rock scrambling, the BLCC will fit your needs.

We are honored to be included in the Great Texas Wildlife Trails, which is sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/. Maps are available at many tourist rest stops on Texas highways as well as most inns and motels.

All of our nature tourism activities are available by appointment.

Bird Watching

North Texas is one of the top birding destinations in the world. It is home to a diverse range of birds and waterfowl year round. The BLCC property provides numerous habitats for a variety of birds. It is likely that in a single outing you may see Bluebirds, Painted Buntings, and the Redtailed Hawk. With over two miles of Red River shoreline, the variety of migratory water birds and other wildlife is spectacular.

You may pick up a map of the Prairies and Pineywoods Wildlife Trail-West at any Texas Department of Transportation Visitors Center or by visiting http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/.

The ever-changing Red River provides hunting grounds for Bald Eagles in the winter and summer nesting grounds for the endangered Least Terns. Roadrunners and Wild Turkey can be seen year round as well as Great Horned Owls. Look for Dickcissels in the open grasslands and Indigo Buntings on the forest edge.

Birding tours are available by appointment.

Hiking

Whether you are a serious hiker, a nature walker, a birder, or just ready to discover the wildlife, we have a path for you. We offer both guided and unguided walks throughout our property. In either case, you are guaranteed to come across some of the most beautiful views in Texas. Spring offers secluded fields of wildflowers and winter brings migratory water fowl and Bald Eagles to the River.

Guided and unguided hikes are available by appointment.

Fishing

Fishing is an ideal activity for multiple generations to enjoy together. We have several well-stocked ponds containing bass and catfish. Striped bass, sand bass, catfish and the elusive river monster – the alligator gar can be caught in the Red River. A fishing license may be required and can be purchased in Muenster, TX.

Fishing spots are available by appointment.

Horseback Riding

If you are a horse-lover, you know that the best way to see any beautiful land is from the back of a horse. The BLCC land is covered with miles of trails appropriate for horseback riding. We have hosted large trail rides to raise money for various events. We have dry lots available for corralling horses during your stay with us as well as ample space for your trailers and gear. We also have accommodations available for rent. We can provide you with a guide or with landmarks and directions for the best views. Many of our trails will lead you to beautiful lookouts over the Red River or fields of wild flowers.

Horseback riding trips are available by appointment.

Camping

Camping on the BLCC property is for experienced campers only. We have no formal campgrounds as we seek to keep the property as close to its original landscape as possible. We ask that you pack out whatever you pack in.
